-A MIGHTY WIND- |
"And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting" (Acts 2:2). Although the symbolic use of wind in this well-known passage of Scripture is usually thought of when thinking Scripturally of a mighty wind, it is not the only meaning for the term. Their were times when the "mighty wind" was also a friendly wind for Israel. "And the LORD turned a mighty strong west wind, which took away the locusts, and cast them into the Red sea; there remained not one locust in all the coasts of Egypt" (Exodus 10:19 cf. Numbers 11:31).
But the "mighty wind" of the Scriptures does not always bring blessings. Like the two-edged sword of the Scriptures, it also has two edges. For example, the "mighty wind" played a major role in Jonah's chastisement.
Jonah 1:4
But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.
The "mighty wind" has dealt harshly with the enemies of Israel.
Isaiah 11:15
And the LORD shall utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea; and with his mighty wind shall he shake his hand over the river, and shall smite it in the seven streams, and make men go over dryshod.
And the "mighty wind" will deal in like manner with the individual who rejects the love of God which is offered in our age in Christ Jesus, the Son of God.
Job 21:17-18
How oft is the candle of the wicked put out! and how oft cometh their destruction upon them! God distributeth sorrows in his anger.
They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away.
It is as the "mighty wind" has to do with judgment that it is used in Revelation.
